Defibrillator donated to WPRC by Clr. Amy Mercer-Bailey.

Life saving equipment can be found in the heart of Northwich’s communities thanks to donations from nine councillors.

A total of 22 heart defibrillators are being located across the area after Cheshire West and Chester councillors funded them from their member budgets.

Clr Charles Fifield, one of the nine councillors, said: “This is such important equipment which can save lives if used quickly and correctly.

“The defibrillators have gone or are about to go into a wide variety of locations where people are also signed up for training courses on how to use the specialised equipment, and are in locations often used or accessed by local people, community or sporting groups.”

Clr Amy Mercer-Bailey, another of the nine funding councillors, has also completed training to be a qualified heart start instructor.

“I feel very strongly that defibrillators should be in as many locations as possible,” she said.

“I have also undertaken the training course myself and endorse the need for training across the area.

“A cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time.

“Those first few moments are vital and I can endorse the fact that a defibrillator is very easy to use.”

A defibrillator is used to shock someone suffering cardiac arrest but the equipment is programmed to only deliver a shock to someone that needs it.

The Heart Start scheme, supported by the British Heart Foundation, the North West Ambulance Service and Cheshire Chain of Survival, teaches basic life support skills.
